Bhubaneswar, 06 August (H.S.) : The Odisha Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) on Thursday observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 at the state level in Bhubaneswar, highlighting the importance of early and exclusive breastfeeding for child health.

The programme, chaired by WCD Commissioner-cum-Secretary Dr. Mrinalini Darswal, saw participation from young children and parents. Emphasising that breast milk is a child’s “first vaccine,” Dr. Darswal urged initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued feeding up to two years along with complementary nutrition. She also stressed the role of families, especially fathers, in supporting child development.

A key highlight was the demonstration of an AI-based child growth monitoring system by the Wadhwani Foundation. The technology uses mobile video to measure key growth indicators such as weight, height, and MUAC. Odisha has been selected as one of the states to pilot this initiative.

Parents of children aged 0–6 years were felicitated with nutrition baskets and childcare kits. Senior officials reaffirmed their commitment to improving maternal and child nutrition.

World Breastfeeding Week is observed from August 1 to 7. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reiterated the government’s commitment, stating that exclusive breastfeeding is essential for building a healthy future for children.
