AMSTELVEEN (Netherlands), 16 August(HS): After opening their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing win over Wales, the Indian men’s hockey team will face England in their second Pool D encounter on Monday. The match at the Wagener Hockey Stadium could play a crucial role in determining the team that finishes at the top of the pool.

India began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales, while England made an equally impressive start by defeating Pakistan 4-1. Both sides will therefore enter the contest determined to strengthen their position with another win.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh was instrumental in India’s victory over Wales, scoring twice, while Sanjay also converted a penalty corner to open India’s scoring. All three of India’s goals came from penalty corners.

However, India created several opportunities from open play but failed to convert them. Against England, the team will look to address that weakness and become more clinical in front of goal.

Paris Olympics memories to resurface

Matches between India and England have produced several closely fought contests in recent years. At the Paris Olympics, India defeated England in the quarter-final despite playing with 10 men for much of the contest. Amit Rohidas was shown a red card in the 17th minute, but India displayed remarkable resilience and eventually went on to secure the bronze medal.

The two teams also met twice recently during the FIH Pro League in London. Neither match was decided in regulation time, with India and England winning one shootout each.

Indian midfielder Hardik Singh, quoted by Hockey India, said the rivalry between the two sides remained competitive but respectful.

“When two evenly matched teams face each other, the contest can become intense on the field. But there is no animosity between us. We have many friends in the England team, regardless of what happened in the Paris Olympics quarter-final. We have always performed well against them at major tournaments. However, that does not mean we can take them lightly. On the day, you have to perform better than your opponent,” he said.

Fulton says victory crucial for both teams

India hold a marginal advantage in the recent head-to-head record. Over the past few years, India have won 10 meetings between the two sides, while England have recorded nine victories and five matches have ended in draws.

India head coach Craig Fulton said the contest would be significantly different from their previous encounters because of the stakes involved at the World Cup.

“Since we started playing in the Pro League, the contests have been very evenly matched. But the World Cup is different. This is a must-win game for both teams,” Fulton said.

He added that England were the highest-ranked team in their pool and that India would need to produce their best performance.

“They are the highest-ranked team in our pool, so we will go all out against them. We have to perform well because they have excellent players and a strong structure. They are very good at what they do. But we have our own plans, and hopefully we can disrupt their plans, impose ourselves on the match and take all three points,” he said.

Victory could strengthen India’s path to the knockout stages

The match is crucial for both India and England. The top two teams from Pool D will progress to the next stage and remain in contention for the semi-finals, while the bottom two sides will move into classification matches.

India will look to maintain the defensive solidity and penalty-corner efficiency they displayed against Wales while improving their conversion rate from open play. Against a strong England side, India will need to retain possession effectively and make better use of their opportunities inside the circle.
