New Delhi, 16 August (H.S.): Amid the celebrations marking Independence Day, a unique blend of fitness and patriotism was witnessed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday.
The 86th edition of Fit India Sunday on Cycle saw thousands of participants, including personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces, young athletes, fitness ambassadors and fitness enthusiasts, come together for the special event.
Participants enthusiastically took part in cycling, running, yoga, Zumba and other fitness activities, besides joining in patriotic songs. They also collectively pledged their commitment to building a drug-free India.
Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Rifles also participated in the special event. Participants took part in a two-kilometre warm-up run followed by a five-kilometre cycling session.
Yusha Nafees, who was part of the Indian junior team that won a bronze medal at the 2026 World Junior Squash Championships, said that linking such programmes with Independence Day celebrations helps instil a strong sense of patriotism among people.
“Connecting such programmes with Independence Day celebrations greatly helps awaken the spirit of patriotism among everyone. Since Independence Day was celebrated yesterday and there is tremendous enthusiasm among the general public, the atmosphere is extremely positive. It feels particularly special for all Indians, as this campaign was launched in 2024 and nearly four million Indians from different districts have participated in it so far,” Nafees said.
Shivani Pawar, the first Indian woman wrestler to win a medal at the 2021 U-23 World Wrestling Championships, described the Fit India initiative as highly significant for young people.
“Fitness is one of the most important things for young people because unless we are healthy, we cannot perform well in any field. Therefore, promoting fitness as much as possible is essential for the youth and future generations,” she said.
Poonam Bisht, Shashi Kala and judoka Lalhumuomi were felicitated during the event for their sporting achievements. Poonam Bisht won a gold medal and Shashi Kala secured a silver at the 2025 World Police and Fire Games, while judoka Lalhumuomi also won a gold medal.
Several other prominent personalities, including CRPF Inspector General Vikas Katheria, participated in the programme.
Former Rajya Sabha member, journalist and author Tarun Vijay was named a Fit India Champion.
Former marathon champion Dr Sunita Godara, who won gold at the 1992 Asian Marathon Games and served as a torchbearer at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was honoured as a Fit India Ambassador. Yoga athlete Divya Aggarwal, a six-time SGFI gold medallist, was also appointed a Fit India Ambassador.
Former Indian Air Force pilot and former captain of the Air Force bodybuilding team Akshay Chopra, along with nutritionist and fitness trainer Timsy Bector, were also felicitated.
Patriotic songs, Zumba and street play add to the atmosphere
A special performance by meditation instructor and Sufi musician CA Atul Chawla further strengthened the patriotic spirit of the event. A street play presented by Rahgiri conveyed messages centred on Independence Day and the campaign for a drug-free India.
The yoga zone featured a yoga session followed by an energetic Zumba workout. Participants also took part in activities including sack races, hula-hooping and badminton.
Tarun Vijay said, “Fit India makes Hindustan stronger. It enhances the vitality of ordinary citizens, fills them with energy and enthusiasm, and creates a sense of pride and respect for the Tricolour. By launching the Fit India campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed the entire country’s youth at the forefront.”
