New Delhi, 10 August (H.S.): Indian boxer Jadumani Singh, who won a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, recalled his victory over a Pakistani opponent on Kargil Vijay Diwas during an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Jadumani said the bout held special significance for him because of his association with the Indian Army, and he dedicated his victory to the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War.

Prime Minister Modi on Sunday met Indian medal winners from the 2026 Commonwealth Games at his residence in New Delhi. During the interaction, the athletes shared some of their memorable experiences from the Games with the Prime Minister.

Modi specifically asked Jadumani about his victory on Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Jadumani recalled that he faced Pakistan’s Sumama Rahman at the Commonwealth Games on the day commemorating India’s victory in the Kargil War. He said that, given his association with the Indian Army, he was determined to secure victory against his Pakistani opponent.

Jadumani defeated Sumama Rahman by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the Round of 16 and dedicated the victory to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army.

Modi appreciated Jadumani’s sentiments and said that dedicating the victory to the heroes of Kargil made the achievement even more meaningful. He noted that Jadumani had prevailed over the very opponent he was determined to defeat, turning the victory into a moment of pride for the country.

PM Modi Praises Mirabai Chanu’s Emotional Victory

During the interaction, Prime Minister Modi also praised weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for the emotional moment surrounding her gold-medal victory at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.

Chanu won the women’s 48kg gold medal in Glasgow, securing her third Commonwealth Games gold medal. She had previously won gold in the 48kg category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and in the 49kg category at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Chanu also has an Olympic silver medal to her name, along with three World Championship medals, including a gold medal won in 2017.

Modi told Chanu that she had made the country proud. Referring to her emotional reaction after winning the gold, he said it appeared as though a gold medal was flowing from every tear she shed.

Chanu said winning gold at the Commonwealth Games after missing out on an Olympic medal by just one kilogram was an intensely emotional experience. She also recalled the difficult period she had endured over the previous four years, including recurring injuries and family-related challenges.

Chanu said standing on the podium, watching the Tricolour being raised and listening to the national anthem was an overwhelming moment that every athlete cherishes.

India finished its campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, securing fourth position in the overall medal standings.

After the conclusion of the 11-day sporting extravaganza, Scotland handed over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India. Ahmedabad is set to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
