New Delhi, 10 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain for displaying a strong sense of patriotism after she objected to a distorted map of India displayed at a restaurant in Glasgow during the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Modi referred to the incident during his interaction with Indian medal winners at his residence and lauded Borgohain for raising the issue despite being in the midst of celebrations following the team’s impressive performance at the Games.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel on Monday, Modi asked Borgohain about the incident at the restaurant and, in a light-hearted manner, enquired whether she had confronted the restaurant staff over the issue.

Borgohain explained that she was already emotional on the final day of the competition following the strong performances by Indian athletes. When she noticed an incorrect depiction of India on a map displayed at the restaurant, she raised the matter with the staff and asked them to replace or correct it.

The boxer said a large number of Indians were present at the restaurant following the impressive performance of the Indian contingent. Seeing an inaccurate map of the country upset her, prompting her to firmly convey her objection to the restaurant employees. The staff accepted her request and subsequently corrected the map.

Modi described the incident as an example of the deep sense of national pride among Indian athletes. He said Borgohain’s attention to the map even amid the celebrations following the medal-winning performances demonstrated that her feelings for the country went far beyond moments on the podium.

The Prime Minister also said that the video capturing the incident would be remembered for a long time.

PM Modi Applauds Indian Boxers’ Strong Showing

Modi also praised the impressive performance of the Indian boxing contingent at the Commonwealth Games. He said Indian boxers had established such a strong reputation that competitors from around the world had begun to feel apprehensive about facing them.

Responding to Modi, Borgohain said Indian boxers had consistently delivered strong performances and created a significant impact at the Games. She noted that the successive gold-medal victories towards the concluding stages of the competition made the Indian boxing team’s overall performance particularly impressive.

Borgohain also highlighted the contribution of the Khelo India initiative to the development of Indian sports. She said the programme had helped several young athletes emerge and had contributed to significant changes across different sporting disciplines.

India Records Best-Ever Commonwealth Boxing Performance

India produced a historic performance in boxing at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, finishing at the top of the boxing medal standings. Indian boxers won 10 medals in total, comprising seven gold and three silver medals, making it the country’s best-ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games.

Overall, India concluded its Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings.

Following the conclusion of the 11-day Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland handed over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India. Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the historic centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
