Bhubaneswar, 06 July (H.S.): In the wake of incessant rainfall triggered by a prevailing low-pressure system, the Odisha government has declared a holiday for educational institutions in six districts on Monday as a precautionary measure.
The districts where schools have remained closed are Nuapada, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sambalpur, Balangir, and Subarnapur.
In Subarnapur, the District Collector ordered the closure of all schools and colleges following the forecast of very heavy rainfall. Continuous downpours accompanied by thunderstorms have caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, leading to flood-like conditions. Poor drainage has resulted in water accumulation on the road connecting Jayguru Chowk and Kacheri Square, disrupting normal movement.
The Boudh District Collector also declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in view of the persistent rain. The district administration cancelled the scheduled joint grievance hearing camp as heavy showers continued throughout the day.
Sambalpur witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall overnight, inundating several low-lying localities. Considering the prevailing situation, the District Collector announced a holiday for all schools under the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Dhankauda block. The District Collector and the SMC Commissioner conducted late-night inspections of the affected areas to assess the situation, as water entered several residential neighbourhoods.
The state government and district administrations are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall continues to impact several parts of western Odisha. Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official advisories.
