Nadia, 06 July (H.S.): A BJP worker was found hanging from a tree with his hands and legs tied in the Sahebbagan area under Kalyani Police Station in Nadia district on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Biswajit Shikdar. The police have launched an investigation and are examining both murder and suicide angles.
The victim's family has not named anyone in their complaint but said they have full faith in the police investigation. They, however, insisted that Biswajit could not have died by suicide.
According to local sources, residents spotted Biswajit's body hanging from a tree in a mango orchard near the railway tracks, about one kilometre from his home, on Monday morning. Family members, BJP leaders and party workers rushed to the spot after being informed. The police from Kalyani Police Station recovered the body and sent it to Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (JNM) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Local sources said Biswajit was an active BJP worker. His father is the BJP booth president of Booth No. 127 under Kalyani Mandal-II.
The BJP has described the incident as a pre-planned political murder. Party leaders alleged that Biswajit was called out from his home, murdered, and later his body was hanged from the tree to make it appear as a suicide. The party further claimed that the family had received repeated threats because of their political affiliation and that Biswajit had earlier been pressured to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Local BJP leaders also alleged that Biswajit had been targeted for raising his voice against alleged corruption by local TMC leaders. They claimed he had previously been assaulted and that his shop had also been vandalised. The BJP has demanded a fair and comprehensive investigation into the incident and strict action against those found responsible.
The police said the investigation is underway and further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and other evidence collected during the probe.
