Lucknow, 05 July (HS): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath expressed profound condolences on the death of Dr. Teejan Bai, a
famed Pandwani vocalist and Padma Vibhushan recipient. CM Yogi recognized her
significant contributions to Indian traditional art, stating that she elevated
Chhattisgarh's rich cultural legacy to new heights.
Dr. Teejan Bai, a noted exponent of Pandwani (a traditional
performance art from Chhattisgarh that narrates the Mahabharata), died at the
age of 70 at AIIMS, Raipur, following a protracted illness. She mastered the
Kapalik style of Pandwani, which had previously been dominated by men, and
overcame substantial societal barriers to achieve global recognition. In honor
of her cultural accomplishments, she was awarded the Padma Shri (1988), Padma
Bhushan (2003), and Padma Vibhushan (2019).
“The passing away of the renowned Pandavani singer, 'Padma
Vibhushan' Dr. Teejan Bai Ji, is extremely heartbreaking. Humble tribute. Through
her exceptional talent, powerful expression, and dedication to music, she
elevated Chhattisgarh's rich folk tradition 'Pandavani' to new heights. Her
contribution to the preservation and promotion of Indian folk art and cultural
heritage is unforgettable. I pray to Maa Danteshwari to grant the departed soul
a place at her divine feet and provide strength to the grieving family and her
admirers to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!” mentioned UP CM in a post on
