Four policemen had allegedly abducted a youth in
1991; three co-accused were sentenced earlier
Mohali, 04 July (H.S.) A special CBI court in Mohali has sentenced
absconding Punjab Police Head Constable Kashmir Singh to five years of rigorous
imprisonment in a nearly 35-year-old kidnapping case. The court has also
imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.
The case dates back to 1991, when four police personnel
allegedly abducted a man who later went missing. The CBI court had already
sentenced the other accused in the case in 2023. Kashmir Singh had fled during
the trial and was declared a proclaimed offender by the court on July 21, 2010.
After nearly 15 years, the CBI arrested him on November
12, 2025. Fresh charges were framed against him on March 2, 2026, and the court
has now sentenced him to imprisonment.
According to the CBI, on August 7, 1991, then SHO Suba
Singh, ASI Dalbir Singh, Head Constable Kashmir Singh and Constable Rawel Singh
of Punjab Police allegedly abducted Baljit Singh. He was illegally detained at
Jhabal police station in Tarn Taran.
Baljit Singh’s family members used to visit the police station
every alternate day to meet him. However, after about 10 days, the police
officials denied that he was in their custody. Since then, Baljit Singh has
remained missing and his whereabouts are still unknown.
Baljit Singh’s wife had filed a criminal writ petition
in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking justice for her husband. Following
the High Court’s strict directions, the CBI registered an FIR in the case on
March 20, 2006, in compliance with the court order dated January 27, 2006.
After a detailed investigation, the CBI filed a
chargesheet against all the accused on April 26, 2007.
Earlier, on March 29, 2023, the CBI court in Mohali had
convicted former SHO Suba Singh, ASI Dalbir Singh and Constable Rawel Singh,
sentencing them to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of
Rs 10,000 each.
With Saturday’s judgment, the court has now awarded the same sentence to
absconding accused Kashmir Singh, bringing the long-pending case to a
conclusion.
