Kolkata, 04 July (H.S.): The Adani Group is set to make a major investment in West Bengal's healthcare sector, with plans to establish a state-of-the-art medical college and super-speciality hospital in New Town. Preliminary discussions on the proposed project have already been held with the state Health Department.
According to sources, Karan Adani, Managing Director of the Adani Group, met the Chief Minister at Nabanna on June 6 and proposed the establishment of an Adani Health City in New Town. The integrated healthcare campus is proposed to be named Arogya Mandir.
The group is already developing a data centre and the Bengal Tech Park in the Bengal Silicon Valley area of New Town, for which it has been allotted 55 acres of land. The proposed Health City is expected to require a similar land area.
The healthcare facility is planned to be developed in collaboration with the renowned US-based Mayo Clinic. It will offer advanced medical services, including robotic surgery, while also serving as a centre for medical education and research.
The proposed campus will include a 150-seat MBBS medical college, a 60-seat nursing college, and 80 postgraduate (MD) seats. Research facilities will also form part of the integrated healthcare complex.
The proposed 1,000-bed hospital will provide treatment to economically weaker sections in addition to offering advanced healthcare services. If the required administrative clearances are completed on schedule, the project is expected to be formally launched before the Durga Puja festival.
While the total investment for the West Bengal project has not yet been disclosed, the Adani Group has already announced plans to invest Rs 60,000 crore in India's healthcare sector over the next 10 years through its social welfare initiatives. The investment plan includes the establishment of 30 hospitals and healthcare centres across the country.
In the first phase, the group has already committed more than Rs 6,000 crore for Health City campuses in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. West Bengal is expected to be part of the next phase of the expansion.
Sources in Nabanna said the process of identifying suitable land for the project is currently underway. Around 52 acres have been identified in New Town Action Area II, although a final decision is yet to be taken. The project will proceed after environmental clearance and other key infrastructure and regulatory approvals are obtained.
