Italian Foreign Minister Backs Calls to Suspend Spain From Schengen Amid Migrant Influx

MOSCOW, July 31 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday that he supported suspending Spain from the European Union's borderless Schengen area due to an influx of migrants into the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday she was considering extraordinary measures in response to the migrant crisis, including suspending the Schengen area with Spain.

I am in favor of closing the Schengen Area to Spain... Irregular and uncontrolled immigration poses a danger to national security, Tajani wrote on X.

Tajani said that images coming from Ceuta showed that the Spanish government's decision to grant Spanish citizenship to more than 500,000 irregular immigrants is deeply flawed and encourages human trafficking.

On Thursday, thousands of young Moroccans gathered at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Hundreds of them managed to enter Spanish territory, prompting authorities to deploy additional police, Civil Guard, and military personnel to the city.
