MOSCOW, July 28 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The United States is reviewing its military presence in Europe to accelerate the transition of responsibility for defense to European NATO allies, Under Secretary of War Elbridge Colby said.
Today, the Department of War kicked off the Europe Posture Review Secretary Hegseth announced at the last NATO Defense Ministerial Meeting in Brussels, the Pentagon's chief strategist wrote on X.
Colby said this will be a real review, designed to ensure that NATO is moving fast and irreversibly toward Europe taking primary responsibility for its conventional defense in line with the 2025 and 2026 national defense strategies.
The results of the review will inform the Pentagon's decision on further military presence in Europe based on strategic, geopolitical and military realities.
In June, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced a six-month review of US troop and base deployments in Europe to assess their locations and accessibility. He said some US allies would fail the review.
