Guwahati, 28 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for closely monitoring the flood situation in the state and extending full support to the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. He said the Centre has been providing all possible assistance to ensure timely relief for flood-affected people.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said Prime Minister Modi has been regularly reviewing the ground situation in Assam and assured that the Central Government stands firmly with the state in relief, rescue and rehabilitation operations.

Dr. Sarma said the Assam Government is carrying out relief and rescue operations on a war footing. Relief teams have reached all affected villages, while electricity has been restored in most flood-hit areas. Relief camps are providing food, safe drinking water, medical care and special facilities for children and other displaced residents.

He added that, alongside immediate relief, the government is working round the clock to prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation plan with public participation to help affected families return to normal life at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said that under its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, its helicopters have rescued 458 people from flood-affected areas of Assam and Nagaland over the past 10 days. The IAF has also airlifted more than nine tonnes of essential relief supplies to remote locations.

According to the Air Force, the operations are being carried out in close coordination with the Indian Army and local civil administration, with additional resources being deployed whenever required.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had reviewed the flood situation in Assam with the state's Members of Parliament and assured continued Central assistance for relief, rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

According to the latest figures released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods continue to affect six districts of the state. More than 4.45 lakh people remain affected, while 631 villages are still inundated. A total of 215 relief camps and relief distribution centres are operational, sheltering nearly 29,983 people and providing food, medical assistance and other essential services.

The state government has urged people to remain alert, avoid rumours and follow advisories issued by the district administration. It reiterated that relief and rescue operations will continue until every affected family receives the necessary assistance and rehabilitation support.---------
