Guwahati, 28 July (HS): Assam Governor and Chancellor of Assam Veterinary and Fisheries University, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, on Tuesday inaugurated the Regional Conference on 'NER Animal Health Security for Viksit Bharat' at the Assam Veterinary and Fisheries University campus in Guwahati. The conference was organised by the College of Veterinary Science to strengthen animal health security in the North Eastern Region.

Addressing the inaugural session, the Governor said healthy livestock is vital for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He noted that livestock plays a crucial role in India's rural economy, culture and heritage, and stressed that healthy animals, prosperous farmers, environmental sustainability and scientific innovation are key pillars of national development.

Highlighting the immense biodiversity and natural resources of the Northeast, Shri Acharya said the region has the potential to become a model for livestock development by integrating modern science with traditional knowledge. He also underlined the importance of the 'One Health' approach, stating that animal health is closely linked to human health, food security, environmental sustainability and economic growth.

The Governor praised the Central Government's initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for strengthening the livestock, dairy and fisheries sectors through disease control programmes, vaccination campaigns and improved veterinary infrastructure. He also appreciated the Assam Government led by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for its efforts to improve livestock quality, enhance milk production, modernise dairy systems and promote self-reliance in fish production.

During the programme, Acharya launched two software applications—NERLDF and PDDES—designed for livestock disease management and rapid detection of animal diseases in the Northeast. He said the digital platforms would enhance disease surveillance and benefit livestock farmers, particularly in remote areas.

The Governor urged universities and research institutions to intensify research and ensure that scientific innovations reach villages and directly benefit farmers. He expressed confidence that the conference would promote collaboration, innovation and sustainable development in the livestock sector across the North Eastern Region.

The event was attended by senior officials from ICAR, vice chancellors of leading agricultural universities, scientists, faculty members, researchers, students and other dignitaries.--------
