Guwahati, 27 July (HS): The Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday passed the Majuli University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the Majuli University of Culture to be transformed into Majuli University, a multidisciplinary institution offering a broader range of academic programmes.
Announcing the development in the Assembly, Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu said the amendment would enable the university to introduce courses in arts, science, economics, technology and several other disciplines while continuing to preserve and promote Assam's rich cultural heritage.
The minister said the reform is in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aimed at expanding opportunities in higher education, interdisciplinary learning, research, and innovation.
According to the state government, the amendment will broaden the university's academic scope beyond cultural studies, creating a more comprehensive higher education institution for students in Assam. The move is also expected to strengthen the university's academic profile and enhance its role in the state's higher education landscape.-----------
