Kolkata, 24 July (H.S.): The West Bengal government is planning to introduce a water taxi service on the Ganges as part of its efforts to strengthen inland water transport and reduce road traffic congestion. State Transport Minister Arjun Singh announced the initiative on Friday, saying passenger convenience and sustainable transportation are key priorities.

According to the minister, the proposed water taxi service will initially operate between Babughat and Metiabruz. In addition to water taxis, long-distance passenger vessels will also be introduced, improving connectivity to several locations along the river.

Speaking to reporters after attending a ceremonial Khuti Puja for the upcoming Durga Puja at Golghar Park in Bhatpara on the occasion of Ulto Rath, Singh said the government is giving equal importance to waterways alongside road transport. He added that expanding river transport will not only reduce traffic congestion but also help curb environmental pollution.

The minister also announced that more state-run buses will be introduced across West Bengal before the Durga Puja festival to enhance public transport services.

The state government has already approved plans to launch a Water Metro service on the Ganges, modeled on the successful Kochi Water Metro. Officials said the service will use modern battery-powered electric hybrid boats, providing an eco-friendly, fast, and comfortable mode of transport.

To support the project, river transport infrastructure is also being upgraded with financial assistance from the World Bank. Around 50 jetties have already been modernised. Thirteen new electric vessels, built at a cost of approximately ₹250 crore, are set to be deployed, while another 22 vessels have been constructed and will enter service soon.

The government is also introducing smart card-enabled access at river jetties as part of a broader plan to modernise and expand West Bengal's inland water transport network.
