Thiruvananthapuram, 24 July (H.S.):The Kerala government's suspension order against Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar has laid out detailed allegations that he attempted to influence the investigation into the alleged rescue operation sabotage case to protect the accused, rather than ensure a fair probe.

The order, which closely mirrors the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), states that Ajith Kumar repeatedly intervened in the investigation and exerted pressure on investigating officers to derail the case. It cites statements from three Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs), who told investigators that the senior officer had attempted to influence the course of the probe. The order also refers to digital evidence that allegedly corroborates their claims.

Accepting a report submitted by the State Police Chief, the government concluded that disciplinary action was warranted. The report held that while senior police officers are empowered under Section 36 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to supervise investigations, Ajith Kumar had allegedly misused those powers to shield the accused instead of safeguarding the interests of the victims.

Ajith Kumar, however, rejected the SIT's findings and questioned its authority to investigate allegations relating to the alteration of official records. He also sought additional time to submit further documents and evidence in his defence, a request that was turned down by the Director General of Police.

The suspension order also dismisses Ajith Kumar's claim that he was in Wayanad overseeing landslide rescue operations when the case was allegedly being manipulated. Investigators reportedly recovered WhatsApp communications showing that he had issued instructions to investigating officers from Wayanad, and these messages have been included as part of the SIT's evidence. Statements from two officers attached to the ADGP's office have also reportedly strengthened the case against him.

The government has also ordered departmental proceedings against three DySPs and two Sub-Inspectors who allegedly acted on Ajith Kumar's instructions. While the suspension has taken immediate effect, the government has not yet clarified whether criminal proceedings will also be initiated against the senior officer. Ajith Kumar is expected to challenge the suspension through legal proceedings.
