Kolkata, 24 July (H.S.): The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified its inquiry into the legality of the construction of properties owned by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata's Kalighat area. The civic body is examining whether the buildings were constructed in accordance with the sanctioned building plans and municipal regulations.

As part of the investigation, KMC had issued a notice directing Amit Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee's father, to appear before the civic authorities with the required documents. However, instead of appearing in person on Friday, Amit Banerjee was represented by his lawyer, who submitted the relevant property and construction documents to the corporation.

The civic body has sought copies of the sanctioned building plans, construction records and details to ascertain whether any additional structures were built beyond the approved plans. Amit Banerjee had been asked to appear before the Building Department of KMC's Borough IX office in Alipore.

Earlier in June, KMC had served notices to several addresses linked to Abhishek Banerjee. Subsequently, Amit Banerjee and his wife Lata Banerjee moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging the notices. In their petition, they contended that both Kalighat properties had been constructed legally and sought the quashing of the notices.

Meanwhile, properties belonging to Leaps and Bounds, an organisation associated with Abhishek Banerjee, have also come under the civic body's scrutiny. KMC has issued a notice directing the organisation to produce valid construction-related documents and sanctioned building plans.

According to KMC officials, further action in the matter will be decided after a detailed examination of the documents submitted.
