Guwahati, 24 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the flood situation in Upper Assam remains extremely serious, with rainfall exceeding 400% above normal emerging as one of the major reasons behind the disaster.

Addressing the media at Lok Seva Bhawan, the Chief Minister said nearly 20% of Sivasagar constituency and 30% of Nazira constituency are still inaccessible as roads have been completely cut off. He said the administration has been unable to reach several affected areas or deliver relief materials, though efforts are continuing to restore connectivity and assist stranded residents.

Sarma said the floods have caused extensive damage to homes, livestock and livelihoods, adding that it is still too early to assess the overall extent of the losses. He informed that the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Ministers have been directed to visit the affected districts over the next three days to review the situation on the ground.

The Chief Minister also credited NHPC for playing a significant role in protecting Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts during the recent spell of severe flooding.

Responding to questions from journalists, Sarma appealed to citizens wishing to support flood-hit families to contribute to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He said assistance from individuals, organisations and institutions would play a vital role in relief and rehabilitation efforts, urging people to stand together in helping those affected by the devastating floods.----------
