Guwahati, 23 July (HS): Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended from the Assam Legislative Assembly for the remainder of the day following a disruption during the proceedings on Thursday.

The incident occurred after Gogoi sought two minutes from Speaker Speaker Ranjit Das to raise the issue of the flood situation in Upper Assam. The Speaker allowed him to speak, but Gogoi continued beyond the allotted time despite repeated requests to conclude his remarks.

He then moved an adjournment motion, which was not admitted by the Chair. Following the rejection of the motion, Gogoi protested in the House, prompting the Speaker to suspend him for the rest of the day.

After walking out of the Assembly, Gogoi strongly criticised the action, alleging that he was prevented from raising the concerns of flood-affected people.

Meanwhile, the incident sparked political debate, with critics pointing out that while legislators from several flood-hit constituencies were engaged in relief and rescue efforts on the ground, Gogoi, who represents the severely affected Sivasagar constituency, was attending the Assembly session in Guwahati. They accused him of prioritising politics over relief work during the ongoing flood crisis.-----------
