Imphal, 22 July (HS): Suspected militants allegedly blew up a Bailey bridge built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Manipur's Kamjong district on Wednesday, cutting off the only road connection between several villages and the district headquarters, police said.
The explosion occurred at around 9:30 am between Phange and Chatric villages over the Namban Lok River. Investigators believe improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were used to demolish the bridge.
During the attack, the assailants also reportedly torched a Bolero pick-up vehicle belonging to the Telecom Department that was parked near the riverbank. The vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire.
Police said the bridge served as the only road link for Chatric and nearby villages, and its destruction has severely disrupted transportation in the area.
Officials suspect the attack was aimed at damaging public infrastructure, disrupting transport and communication services, restricting civilian movement, and creating fear among local residents. The incident has been described as a serious threat to public safety and state security.
A suo motu case has been registered at CSD Police Station under relevant legal provisions, and an investigation is underway to identify and arrest those involved. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.----------
