New Delhi, 22 July (H.S.): Educationist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk has written to Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, stating that he would end his indefinite hunger strike if the government assures him that no legal action will be taken against the youths who participated in the protest. Wangchuk shared the letter on social media platform X.

In the letter, Wangchuk said, “If the government gives a clear assurance that no punitive or legal action of any kind will be taken against the young people who participated in the protest, I will end my hunger strike with confidence.”

Wangchuk thanked the two Union Ministers for visiting him at the hospital and appealing to him to end his fast. He said that during their meeting, the ministers gave positive assurances regarding providing appropriate compensation to the families of students who died by suicide after the examination paper leak issue, holding a meaningful discussion on the matter in Parliament, ensuring accountability of the Education Minister, and considering the demand for his resignation.

Wangchuk said that the Parliament March held on July 20 remained completely peaceful despite alleged police high-handedness and the use of force. He expressed hope that no legal cases, harassment or retaliatory action would be initiated against those involved in the movement.

He further stated that after the meeting with the Union Ministers, around 65 Members of Parliament from various political parties had also written to him and met him personally, urging him to end his hunger strike.

Wangchuk said that he wanted to continue working for the country, students and the education system, but not at the cost of the young people for whom the movement was launched. Otherwise, he would be compelled to continue his indefinite hunger strike.
