Bhubaneswar, 21 July (H.S.): Students of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, staged a protest on campus on Tuesday, raising concerns over student welfare issues, including the mandatory uniform policy, inadequate hostel facilities, and poor food quality.

The protest was led primarily by second-year students, who demanded immediate intervention by the university authorities to address their grievances. The agitating students urged the administration to reconsider the implementation of compulsory uniforms, stating that the decision should be reviewed after taking student feedback into account.

A key concern highlighted during the protest was the prescribed uniform—a blue full-sleeve polyester shirt—which students claimed is unsuitable for Sambalpur’s humid climate. They also pointed out the unavailability of good-quality fabric in the market and difficulties in maintaining the uniform, especially during the monsoon season.

“We have discussed our concerns with the Vice-Chancellor and informed him about the issues related to the uniform. Wearing polyester fabric in this weather is uncomfortable, and washing it during the rainy season is challenging,” said a protesting student.

Students also raised issues regarding hostel infrastructure, alleging a lack of basic amenities. Additionally, they expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of food being served in the hostels.

“The quality of food is a concern, but our primary issue remains the discomfort caused by the uniform,” said a female student.

The students have called for prompt action to improve living conditions on campus and allow flexibility in dress code. Meanwhile, no official response has been issued by the university authorities regarding the matter.
