New Delhi, 21 July (H.S.): A day after Argentina suffered a 0-1 defeat against Spain in extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, Argentina captain Lionel Messi shared an emotional message expressing gratitude to the fans. Messi said the pain of the defeat is very deep and the wound will take time to heal, but he remains proud of the fight and determination shown by the team throughout the tournament.

In the final played in New Jersey, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy. After the match, Messi was seen in tears, and speculation intensified regarding his international future.

In a message written in Spanish on Instagram, Messi said, “This pain is very deep and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I will also cherish all the beautiful moments... the matches we won by making comebacks, where we gave everything we had. Those moments will always remain in our memories. The support of the entire nation, along with the hard work and dedication of this team, once again placed us among the best teams in the world.”

He further said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who sent us their good wishes and messages. Once again, we managed to unite the entire country and together we experienced the pride of being Argentinians.”

Messi also congratulated Spain in his message, saying, “I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Spain for this championship.”

Messi’s Outstanding Contribution to the National Team

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi guided Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title after defeating France in the final. He also helped the team win consecutive Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

During this World Cup, Messi took his international goal tally to 125, which is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 146 goals.

In the FIFA World Cup 2026, Messi scored eight goals and provided four assists. He also became the first player in World Cup history to start three final matches, although this time he could not guide Argentina to victory against Spain.

Meanwhile, Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia also praised Messi’s extraordinary service and contribution to the national team and paid tribute to the legendary player with words of appreciation.
