New Delhi, 21 July (H.S.): Spain have secured the top position in the FIFA Men’s Football Rankings after winning the FIFA World Cup 2026 title. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final to reclaim the No. 1 spot after six months, pushing the defending world champions Argentina down to second place.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time of the World Cup final, guiding Spain to their second-ever men’s FIFA World Cup title. With this achievement, Spain have now become the top-ranked team in both the FIFA men’s and women’s rankings. Spain’s women’s team are also the reigning world champions.

Argentina Second, France Maintain Third Position

Led by captain Lionel Messi, Argentina have dropped one place to the second position in the latest rankings. Despite finishing fourth in the World Cup, France have retained their third position, while England remain in fourth place.

Brazil Return to Top Five, Portugal and Germany Suffer Setbacks

UEFA Nations League champions Portugal, who were eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, have slipped two places to seventh position.

Meanwhile, Brazil, who were also eliminated during the tournament, climbed one place to return to the top five after six months and are now ranked fifth.

Four-time world champions Germany suffered a setback after being knocked out by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32. The defeat affected their ranking as well, with Germany dropping two places to 12th position. This is their lowest ranking since September 2025.

Mexico Make Biggest Leap Among Host Nations

Among the FIFA World Cup 2026 co-host nations, Mexico made the biggest improvement. Mexico climbed four places to reach the 10th position. The team advanced to the Round of 16, where they suffered a 2-3 defeat against England at their home venue, the Azteca Stadium.

According to FIFA, a total of 105 international matches were played during the June ranking cycle, out of which 104 games were part of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The tournament was hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
