Hooghly, 21 July (H.S.): Former Chinsurah MLA and Hooghly district Trinamool Congress president Asit Majumdar was arrested on Tuesday, ahead of the party's July 21 Martyrs' Day programme in Kolkata. Police sources said the action was taken in connection with an extortion-related case.

According to the police, a team from Chinsurah Police Station reached Majumdar's residence on Tuesday morning and took him to the police station for questioning. After several hours of interrogation, he was arrested. Following a medical examination, he was brought back to the police station.

Reacting to his arrest, Majumdar said, What can I say... it is all my fate.

However, his supporters alleged that he was initially taken to the police station to prevent him from attending the Trinamool Congress programme organised by the Kalighat unit on July 21. They claimed that he was later arrested in another case.

Police sources said a youth from Habra had been arrested for allegedly impersonating a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer, visiting Majumdar's residence, threatening him and demanding money. Majumdar had been called to the police station to identify the accused. Subsequently, he was arrested in a separate pending case.

Majumdar had earlier been arrested on May 31 on charges including obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, extortion and outraging the modesty of a woman. He was granted bail after spending 19 days in jail. During his incarceration, the Trinamool Congress appointed him as the president of its Hooghly district unit.
