Silchar (Assam), 02 July (HS): Police arrested a young man from the Goldighi Mall area here after he was found inside a cinema hall with a minor Hindu girl, whom he had allegedly befriended by hiding his religious identity. The arrested person has been identified as Sujoy Barua, also known as Barbhua, a resident of Dudhpatil. According to reports, Barua presented himself as a Hindu while maintaining a romantic relationship with the underage girl for a considerable period.
Police informed on Thursday that Bajrang Dal members reportedly spotted the duo at the cinema hall. They surrounded and physically assaulted the youth before police arrived at the scene and took him into custody for questioning.
Complainants alleged that Barua used a false identity to develop the relationship and engaged in a physical relationship through deception. Police said they are actively investigating the claims. The incident has sparked widespread tension in Silchar. Several similar cases of alleged identity concealment in interfaith relationships have been reported in Assam earlier. While some organisations and political groups describe such incidents as “Love Jihad.”Authorities have not linked the case to any broader pattern and are focusing on facts related to the minor.
