Kohima, 19 July (HS): At least four bodies have been recovered while rescue teams continue searching for five others after a massive landslide struck Mon town, the district headquarters of Nagaland, on Sunday. Officials fear that nine people were trapped under the debris.

According to official sources, four women are believed to be among those affected. The landslide occurred in a settlement located below the Assam Rifles camp, causing extensive damage to homes and property.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed grief over the tragedy and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He said the state government is closely monitoring the situation and that teams from the NSDMA, district administration, DDMA, SDRF, police, Assam Rifles and local volunteers are engaged in round-the-clock search and rescue operations.

In a separate statement, the Chief Minister announced immediate compensation for the families of those killed and relief assistance for all affected residents.

Preliminary reports suggest that several people may still be trapped beneath the debris. More than 10 houses, including RCC structures, were reportedly buried or washed away in the landslide.

The disaster occurred amid continuous heavy rainfall, with unstable ground, fresh debris flow and fast-moving water severely hampering rescue efforts. Authorities are continuing operations under challenging conditions while assessing the full extent of the damage.-----------
