Kolkata, 17 July (H.S.): Acting on an initiative by Khanakul MLA Sushanta Ghosh, multiple samples of water used in puchka (panipuri) were collected through the Block Medical Officer of Health (BMOH) and tested at the West Bengal Public Health Laboratory in the interest of public health. The laboratory report detected the presence of E. coli and Coliform bacteria in the samples. It also found that the total bacterial count was significantly higher than the prescribed safe limit, following which the samples were declared Unsafe.
Speaking on the issue, MLA Sushanta Ghosh on Friday said that there can be no compromise with public health. He stated that the scientific testing of puchka water was undertaken to make people aware of potential health risks and to ensure food safety.
According to health experts, the presence of E. coli and Coliform bacteria indicates contaminated water and poor hygiene. Consumption of food prepared with such water can lead to diarrhoea, vomiting, severe stomach infections, fever and other water-borne diseases. The risk is particularly high for children, the elderly and people with weakened immunity.
Following the laboratory findings, the concerned puchka vendors have been instructed to use only mineral water for preparing puchka water. They are also being sensitised to maintain proper hygiene and comply with the food safety standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
