New Delhi, 16 July (H.S.):
A high-level meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership was held at the Prime Minister's residence late Wednesday night to discuss the formation of the new team under BJP National President Nitin Nabin and preparations for the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin on July 20.
According to sources, the meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh and several other senior party leaders. The deliberations lasted for nearly three hours. However, the BJP has not yet issued any official statement regarding the meeting.
Another party source said the discussions should not be viewed merely as preparations for the upcoming Parliament session but as a crucial step towards shaping significant organisational and governmental changes in the coming weeks.
The meeting has drawn considerable attention in political circles as it followed a series of high-level consultations held over the past several days. Wednesday night's deliberations are being seen as the concluding stage of those discussions.
According to reliable party sources, five important meetings had taken place before the gathering at the Prime Minister's residence. The first meeting was held at the Prime Minister's residence and attended by Union ministers and senior government officials. The second took place at the residence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, where Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin, B.L. Santhosh and other senior leaders were present. In the third phase, Prime Minister Modi held separate discussions with senior officials. The fourth meeting was between Amit Shah and Nitin Nabin, while the fifth was convened at the Home Minister's residence on the night of July 14. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended that meeting, with Nitin Nabin and B.L. Santhosh joining later.
Political observers believe the series of meetings was aimed at formulating a comprehensive strategy for both the government and the party organisation. The meeting at the Prime Minister's residence is being regarded as the final and most significant phase of that process.
The first major agenda item was the government's strategy for the Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning on July 20. Discussions focused on likely issues to be raised by the Opposition, the government's legislative priorities, coordination within Parliament and the preparedness of various ministries. The government aims to ensure the effective presentation of key Bills and policy initiatives while responding to the Opposition's criticism with both factual and political arguments.
The second major topic was the proposed restructuring of the BJP's organisational framework. Extensive deliberations were held on the formation of the party's new national team under the leadership of recently appointed National President Nitin Nabin. Discussions also covered the allocation of responsibilities at various organisational levels, strengthening coordination across states and preparing specialised strategies for states heading to Assembly elections.
According to sources, a possible reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers also figured prominently in the discussions. The leadership reportedly deliberated on potential changes in ministerial portfolios, the induction of new faces into the government and the manner in which greater representation could be provided to allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The meeting also reviewed the political situation in states scheduled to hold Assembly elections in the coming months. Discussions centred on strengthening the party organisation, election campaigns, booth-level management, coordination with alliance partners and devising state-specific strategies to address local issues. The BJP leadership is said to be focused on making the party organisation more active and effective in election-bound states.
Political analysts believe that, following several rounds of consultations, the high-level meeting at the Prime Minister's residence provides a clear indication of the BJP's and the Union Government's strategic roadmap for the months ahead.
