Kolkata, 16 July (H.S.) :

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intensified monsoon activity across West Bengal on Thursday, with widespread cloud cover, thunderstorms and rain expected in most parts of the state. Influenced by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, several districts of South Bengal have been placed under a warning for heavy rainfall and lightning.

According to the weather office, the state's maximum temperature is expected to remain between 31°C and 33°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to range from 27°C to 28°C. Humidity levels are expected to remain high, between 80 and 88 per cent, resulting in uncomfortable and sultry weather conditions. Easterly winds are likely to blow at speeds of 10 to 12 mph.

Heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated places in Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, and Jhargram districts. Coastal areas may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning. Some locations could receive between 70 mm and 110 mm of rainfall during the day.

In North Bengal, continuous rainfall is expected across Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar, including the Terai and Dooars regions. The weather department has warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas and waterlogging in low-lying regions due to persistent rainfall.

Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27°C on Thursday morning, while the maximum temperature is expected to touch 33°C later in the day.

The IMD has advised fishermen to check the latest weather bulletin before venturing into the sea. Residents have also been urged to avoid open fields, trees and electric poles during thunderstorms and lightning to ensure their safety.
