Guwahati, 15 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday outlined the government's vision for rapid development during the Assembly session, announcing a series of infrastructure, urban beautification and investment initiatives while launching a sharp attack on the Opposition.
The Chief Minister said the Public Works Department will plant Ajar trees along the Guwahati Ring Road to enhance the city's aesthetic appeal. He also suggested that buildings matching the city's landscape be painted in the colour of the Kopou flower to give Guwahati a distinctive visual identity.
Defending the government's employee welfare measures, Sarma said Assam is providing 60% Dearness Allowance (DA) despite challenging circumstances. He claimed that only Assam, Haryana and Odisha are currently extending DA at this level.
Calling for greater industrial growth, the Chief Minister stressed the need to develop satellite cities in Assam. He alleged that certain groups continue to oppose development projects and warned that the state must create a favourable investment climate instead of forcing its youth to seek employment elsewhere.
Targeting the Opposition, Sarma said it has failed to question the government's promises, adding that the government itself is prepared to present its commitments, including the issue of providing two lakh government jobs, before the Assembly.
The Chief Minister further blamed frequent protests and Left-oriented ideology for slowing Assam's progress. Citing Arunachal Pradesh's hydropower expansion as an example, he said development projects in Assam often face prolonged controversies, even for infrastructure such as flyovers.
Reaffirming his government's commitment to development, Sarma declared that Assam would witness work at storm speed over the next five years. He asserted that no obstacle could halt the state's march towards progress and vowed to overcome all opposition to development initiatives.------------
