New Delhi, 08 June (H.S.):
A status report has been submitted before the Supreme Court in connection with the building collapse incident in Delhi's Saket area. The report was filed by the amicus curiae appointed in matters relating to illegal constructions.
In the report, the amicus curiae has held the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) responsible for the collapse, alleging that the tragedy was the result of continuous negligence and inaction on the part of the civic body.
The report calls for stringent action against violations of building laws and regulations. It also recommends a comprehensive drive against illegal constructions across Delhi to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Further, the report seeks the fixing of accountability for the accident and demands action against officials found responsible for lapses that may have contributed to the collapse. It also calls for adequate compensation to be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
According to the amicus curiae, the building collapse in the Saket area, which claimed six lives, occurred due to negligence on the part of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The incident took place on May 30 in the Saidulajab locality near Saket Metro Station, where a five-storey building suddenly collapsed. The structure fell onto a nearby canteen where several people were having meals at the time.
The victims reportedly had little opportunity to react before being trapped under the debris. Rescue teams were subsequently deployed to clear the rubble and search for survivors.
The report places particular emphasis on strengthening enforcement mechanisms against unauthorised construction and ensuring that civic authorities strictly monitor compliance with building safety norms.
The matter is currently under consideration before the Supreme Court, which is examining issues related to illegal constructions and accountability in connection with the fatal collapse.
