New Delhi, 25 June (H.S.): In a significant step toward promoting fresh fruit exports, India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has successfully shipped the first commercial sea consignment of 5 metric tonnes of Banganapalli mangoes from Andhra Pradesh to Singapore. The initiative marks an important milestone in advancing cost-effective and sustainable exports of Indian horticultural produce.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, the export consignment has generated substantial economic benefits for farmers. While Banganapalli mangoes were selling in the domestic market at prices ranging between ₹25 and ₹26 per kilogram, the export shipment fetched nearly ₹50 per kilogram. As a result, farmers received almost double the income and secured significantly better returns for their produce.
The ministry stated that the consignment comprised 5 metric tonnes (MT) of Banganapalli mangoes exported by M/s Awesome Food Solutions LLP. The shipment was dispatched on June 11 and arrived in Singapore on June 24.
The ministry noted that the initiative represents a major achievement in promoting low-cost fruit exports through sea routes while contributing to the objective of enhancing farmers’ incomes.
It further stated, “The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, has successfully completed the first commercial sea shipment of premium Banganapalli mangoes from India to Singapore.”
The ministry highlighted that the successful commercial sea export of Banganapalli mangoes to Singapore marks a significant milestone, as mangoes have traditionally been exported primarily through air freight. The shift to sea transport is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve export competitiveness, and strengthen sustainable trade practices.
APEDA’s initiative is being viewed as a major breakthrough in encouraging affordable maritime exports of fresh fruits while helping farmers obtain better value for their produce and increasing their overall earnings.
