New Delhi, 24 June (H.S.): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said that the true strength of democracy lies in the relationship of trust between citizens and those holding public office, emphasizing that public positions should be viewed as responsibilities rather than privileges.

Addressing the launch of the book, VIP Culture in India: Power, Privilege and Distance from Democracy, authored by former Rajya Sabha member Nabam Rebia and co-author Sandeep Kumar at the Vice President's Enclave, Radhakrishnan said that the Indian Constitution envisions a society founded on justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. He stressed that democracy flourishes when humility, accountability, and a spirit of public service are given priority in public life.

The Vice President said that the essence of democracy is reflected in the relationship between citizens and those entrusted with public authority. Referring to the teachings of the renowned Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar, he observed that true leadership is defined by accessibility, compassion, and accountability. Leaders who remain approachable and respectful towards the public, he said, earn enduring trust.

Radhakrishnan noted that the themes explored in the book align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of public office as an instrument of service. He cited the abolition of red beacons on VIP vehicles and recently the Prime Minister's decision to delay his departure to avoid inconveniencing NEET candidates affected by traffic restrictions. According to the Vice President, such actions exemplify citizen-centric governance and reinforce the principle that public authority exists to serve the people.

Quoting the Prime Minister, he said, “Every Indian is special; every Indian is a VIP.” He also reiterated the principle that “Service is the highest duty.”

The Vice President praised the book for highlighting the simplicity and commitment to public service demonstrated by several distinguished leaders, including former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He said the authors had enriched their analysis through references to India's civilizational and intellectual traditions, including the Upanishads, the Ramcharitmanas, the teachings of the Buddha, and the Panchatantra.

Calling for a renewed commitment to the foundational values of the Republic, Radhakrishnan said that equality before the law, respect for the dignity of every citizen, and public service guided by humility constitute the true benchmarks of democratic leadership. He added that the real measure of leadership lies in the trust it inspires and the service it renders to society.

Among those present at the event were former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, former Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya W. R. Kharlukhi, author Nabam Rebia, co-author Sandeep Kumar, and several other distinguished guests.
