Guwahati, 24 June (H.S.): Police in Guwahati detained ten Bangladeshi nationals from the Paltan Bazar area late Tuesday night after they failed to produce valid identity and travel documents during questioning.

According to a Paltan Bazar Police official, the individuals were initially taken into custody by the local police and were subsequently handed over to the Border Police for verification and further legal proceedings.

The official stated that the verification process has been completed and that the detainees admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens. Their inquiry has been concluded. They have acknowledged that they are citizens of Bangladesh. Arrangements are now being made to send them back, the official said.

Authorities have also launched an investigation into the lodge where the group had been staying. The lodge owner, identified as Hriday Deka, is being questioned for allegedly allowing the individuals to stay without obtaining and verifying the mandatory identity documents required under lodging regulations.

The latest action comes just days after 13 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended from Guwahati's Arya Nagar locality on June 19. Those individuals had also failed to furnish valid identification and travel papers and were repatriated after verification by the authorities.

Police said verification drives are continuing across the city as part of an ongoing effort to identify illegal entrants and initiate appropriate legal action against those found residing in the country without valid documentation.
