Kolkata, 21 June (H.S.):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built naval platforms—INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak—at a ceremonial event in Kolkata, describing the occasion as a significant milestone in strengthening India's maritime security and advancing the country's self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Addressing the Tri Commissioning ceremony, the Prime Minister said the induction of the three naval assets reflects India's growing capability to design, build and deploy sophisticated defence platforms using indigenous technology. He noted that the commissioning marks another step towards enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Navy while reinforcing the country's strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
Modi said India's maritime strength is essential for safeguarding national security, securing sea lanes and supporting regional stability. He added that a stronger and modern Navy plays a crucial role in protecting the country's coastline, trade routes and maritime interests amid evolving security challenges.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the government's emphasis on the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, stating that indigenous defence production has reduced dependence on foreign suppliers while creating new opportunities for domestic industries, innovation and skilled employment. He said India's shipbuilding sector has witnessed significant progress in recent years, enabling the country to produce advanced naval platforms that meet global standards.
INS Agray is a modern warship designed to enhance the Navy's combat capabilities, while INS Dunagiri is a stealth frigate equipped with advanced weapons and surveillance systems for multi-dimensional maritime operations. INS Sanshodhak, a state-of-the-art survey vessel, is expected to strengthen the Navy's hydrographic capabilities by conducting detailed seabed mapping, navigation surveys and maritime data collection essential for both defence operations and safe navigation.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior naval officers, defence officials and government representatives. The induction of the three vessels is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy's operational capability across combat, surveillance and hydrographic missions.
The event formed part of the Prime Minister's visit to Kolkata, where he earlier led the national celebrations marking the 12th International Day of Yoga before attending the naval commissioning ceremony.
