Guwahati, 21 June (HS): The 12th International Yoga Day was observed with enthusiasm in Dimoria Co-District of Kamrup Metropolitan district on Sunday under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The programme was organised by the National AYUSH Mission in collaboration with the Dimoria Sub-Divisional Administration at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Komarkuchi.

Attending the event as the chief guest, Assam Finance, Environment, Forest and Mines and Minerals Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah highlighted the importance of yoga in ensuring a healthy and active life, particularly in old age. He said regular practice of yoga helps people maintain good health and contributes to building a healthier nation. Emphasising that yoga has gained widespread acceptance across India, the minister urged citizens to make yoga a part of their daily routine. He also noted that more than 3.2 million women in Assam have become associated with yoga through Self-Help Groups.

Dimoria MLA Dr. Tapan Das described yoga as a scientific method that unites the mind, body and soul. He said regular practice of yoga can help people overcome many age-related health problems and encouraged everyone to adopt the discipline for a healthier lifestyle.

The programme featured yoga demonstrations by five trained instructors from different parts of Kamrup Metropolitan district. A large number of officials, students, members of Self-Help Groups, panchayat representatives, security personnel and local residents participated in the celebration.

Among those present were Additional Chief Secretary Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission Mission Director Kuntal Mani Sharma Bordoloi, Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad Kalpana Deka, Assistant Commissioner Rishi Bandana Gogoi, Dimoria Assistant Commissioner Hirak Jyoti Saikia and representatives of various government departments and institutions.

Similar International Yoga Day programmes were also organised in New Guwahati and Jalukbari sub-divisions of the district.----------
