Traditional Water Harvesting Systems Receives International Recognition

Prayagraj, 16 June

(HS): In a significant achievement for Indian research and traditional water

conservation practices, Ram Babu Tiwari, a research scholar at the Govind

Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute, has been honoured with the International

Investigator Gaurav Award at an international seminar held in Lumbini, Nepal.

The award was presented in recognition of his

outstanding research on the ponds of the Bundelkhand region and traditional

water harvesting systems. The two-day international seminar was jointly

organized by Lumbini Buddhist University, Nepal, Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial

P.G. College, and Kalindi Publications, India on June 15 and 16. Scholars and

researchers from four countries participated in the event, which featured

around 140 research papers.

The seminar focused on the theme, “Global Discourse

on Education, Literature, Society and Culture: Challenges, Opportunities and

Possibilities.” During the event, Tiwari presented a research paper

highlighting the historical, social, and environmental significance of

Bundelkhand’s traditional ponds. His study emphasized how these water bodies

once served as the backbone of rural life and how their revival can help

address contemporary water challenges.

According to the research, rejuvenating neglected

ponds can improve groundwater levels, conserve biodiversity, and reduce local

water scarcity. The study also underscores the importance of community

participation in sustainable water management.

Speaking on the occasion, Acharya Dayanidhi, Campus

Chief of Lumbini Buddhist University, praised Tiwari’s work, describing it as a

practical model of people-centric water conservation. He noted that such

research has the potential to bring meaningful social and environmental change

in water-stressed regions like Bundelkhand.

Expressing

gratitude after receiving the honour, Ram Babu Tiwari thanked his mentors and

colleagues for their support. He said the recognition would encourage further

efforts toward promoting traditional knowledge and sustainable water conservation

practices.
