Vembuli

Chennai, 12 June (H.S.):

A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary has been booked by the police following allegations of harassment made by a woman working as the in-charge of a women's fitness centre in Chennai's Alandur area. The accused, identified as Vembuli, who served as the Alandur North TVK area secretary, is currently absconding, police said.

According to the complaint lodged with the St Thomas Mount police, the woman alleged that Vembuli repeatedly harassed her and attempted to exert pressure on her by making demands linked to her continued employment at the fitness centre. She claimed that he had been insisting that she comply with his wishes if she wanted to retain her position at the facility.

The complainant further alleged that the TVK functionary frequently visited her residence late at night, causing her fear, distress and mental trauma. Unable to bear the alleged harassment, she approached the police seeking legal action.

Based on the complaint, the St Thomas Mount police registered a case against Vembuli under provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Police officials said an investigation has been launched and statements are being collected as part of the inquiry.

The allegations have also prompted disciplinary action within the ruling party. Chennai Suburban TVK district secretary Saravanan announced that Vembuli had been removed from all party responsibilities, including his primary membership, citing conduct that had tarnished the image and reputation of the party.

Police said special teams are attempting to trace the accused, who has remained out of reach since the case was registered. Officials added that further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The case has drawn attention as another instance of alleged harassment involving a political functionary, with both police and party authorities moving swiftly following the complaint.
