
New Delhi, 11 June (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the accident that occurred at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited in Andhra Pradesh. The accident, which took place on June 8, claimed the lives of eight workers and left six others seriously injured.
The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, seeking a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.
According to the NHRC, a workers’ union has alleged that the plant management failed to adhere to mandatory safety regulations, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
The Commission has directed the state government to include in its report details regarding the medical condition of the injured workers, as well as information on the ex gratia compensation provided to them and to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
The NHRC stated that the matter raises serious concerns regarding workplace safety and the protection of workers’ rights, warranting a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
