Hooghly, 01 June (H.S.): Some political journeys stand as examples of perseverance, dedication, and unwavering commitment. The journey of Serampore MLA Bhaskar Bhattacharya is one such story. A senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, management professional, organizational leader, and public representative, Bhattacharya assumed a new responsibility in public life when he took oath as a Minister of State in the West Bengal Government on Monday.
Bhaskar Bhattacharya's career reflects a unique blend of academic excellence, professional expertise, and political experience. A student of Commerce, he later earned a degree in Management before establishing himself in the legal profession. As a senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, he built a reputation for his deep understanding of legal matters and effective courtroom advocacy. His professional journey also includes serving as a Director in an institution under the Government of India, where he gained valuable administrative and managerial experience.
His political rise was shaped through years of organizational work. As the State Convenor of the West Bengal BJP Human Rights Cell, Bhattacharya played an active role in highlighting human rights issues across the state. Recognizing his leadership abilities and organizational skills, the Bharatiya Janata Party appointed him President of the then undivided Hooghly District unit. In that role, he worked extensively to strengthen the party's grassroots network, train party workers, and expand the organization across the district.
Bhattacharya is regarded as a leader who has consistently fulfilled every responsibility entrusted to him by the party leadership. His dedication, discipline, and commitment gradually established him as one of the BJP's trusted faces in West Bengal.
However, his political journey was not without setbacks. In the 2016 Assembly elections, the BJP fielded him from the Serampore Assembly constituency. He was unsuccessful in that contest, but the defeat did not deter him. Instead, he continued to remain actively engaged with the people, raised local issues, and worked tirelessly to strengthen the party organization in the constituency.
Years of perseverance eventually paid off when he secured a convincing victory from the Serampore Assembly seat. The victory was not merely an electoral success; it was a reflection of his long struggle, political patience, and the trust reposed in him by the people. Winning from a politically significant constituency like Serampore elevated his stature in state politics.
Following his swearing-in as a Minister of State, Bhaskar Bhattacharya acknowledged the greater responsibilities that now lie ahead. Speaking to Hindusthan Samachar, he said, “My responsibilities have increased after becoming a minister. As an MLA, my responsibility was primarily towards the people of Serampore. Now, as a minister, my responsibility extends to the entire state. I have to think and work for the development of West Bengal as a whole. We will work in accordance with the guidance and directions of our Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.”
From being a Commerce student, a management professional, a former director in a central government institution, a senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, State Convenor of the BJP Human Rights Cell, district BJP president, and MLA, to now serving as a State Minister, Bhaskar Bhattacharya’s journey exemplifies how dedication, organizational commitment, and public service can lead to greater responsibilities and higher office.
What began as a career in law and public service in Serampore has now brought him to the centre of governance in West Bengal, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
