Guwahati, 06 May (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday tendered his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan, two days after the declaration of the 2026 Assembly election results. The move sets in motion the formal process for the formation of a new government in the state.
The state went to polls for its 126-member Assembly on April 9, with counting held on May 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a clear majority on its own by winning 82 seats. However, the party had contested the elections under the banner of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Its allies, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front, won 10 seats each, taking the NDA’s combined tally to 102.
In contrast, the Indian National Congress managed to secure 19 seats, while its allies registered limited gains. Raijor Dal and All India United Democratic Front won two seats each and All India Trinamool Congress secured one seat. Notably, Left parties failed to win any seat this time, unlike in 2021 when they had a marginal presence.
Following his resignation, Sarma shared a message on social media, describing the day as a “proud moment in democracy.” He stated that he had formally requested the dissolution of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly while submitting his resignation, calling it a reflection of respect for the people’s mandate.
The Governor has asked Sarma to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government assumes office. Sarma said the mandate marks the beginning of a new chapter, adding that the NDA is preparing to move forward with renewed commitment and responsibility under what he termed as “NDA 3.0,” with a clear focus on Assam’s development and future growth.-----------
