New Delhi, 04 May (H.S.): The race for the Orange and Purple Caps in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 grew tighter and more intriguing after Sunday’s double‑header matches, even as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) both suffered defeats at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT), respectively. The individual performances on the day, however, triggered notable shifts in the top‑run‑scorer and wicket‑taker tables.
Orange Cap: Abhishek Sharma back at No. 1
Abhishek Sharma has reclaimed the prestigious Orange Cap, moving to the top of the batting charts with 440 runs from 10 matches. Despite a modest 15‑run outing against KKR, his cumulative tally was enough to edge past Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper KL Rahul (433 runs), who now sits in second place.
Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad remains a distant third with 425 runs, having been restricted for a big score in the KKR clash, while Rajasthan Royals’ opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (404 runs) holds fourth position.
Inside the top five, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Sai Sudharsan earned a fresh entry after an explosive 57‑run knock off 41 balls, hauling his season tally to 385 runs. Elsewhere, Mumbai Indians’ Ishan Kishan moved up to ninth place with 354 runs after a 42‑run innings, while Travis Head leapt to 12th after smashing 61 off 28 balls, underlining the congested nature of the race for the season’s top run‑scorer.
Purple Cap: Rabada’s strong comeback
On the bowling front, Kagiso Rabada staged a commanding comeback in the Purple Cap race. Over the last six matches, he has picked up 12 wickets, taking his overall season tally to 16 scalps and pushing him into third place overall.
Rabada now trails Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Chennai Super Kings’ Anshul Kamboj, who are tied at the summit with one more wicket than the South African pacer.
Not everyone found luck with the ball on Sunday. Prasidh Krishna did not feature in the game, Ishan Malaneka went wicketless, and Rashid Khan managed only a single scalp.
On the brighter side, Mohammed Siraj and Kartik Tyagi each claimed two wickets, boosting their counts to 11 apiece and keeping them firmly in the top‑ten list of the Purple Cap standings.
Overall, the double‑header has thinned the margins, with both the Orange and Purple Cap battles poised for a fiercely contested finish as the IPL 2026 season enters its decisive phase.
