Malmö, Sweden, 04 May (H.S.): India’s Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi scored an impressive victory over Sweden’s Nils Grandelius in the third round of the Tepe Sigeman & Company Chess Tournament, moving into a shared lead after three rounds. The win showcased Erigaisi’s sharp preparation and confident handling of a theoretical line made famous by his compatriot R. Vaishali.
Grandelius continues to struggle; Erigaisi repeats Vaishali’s recipe
Grandelius, who had already lost both his first two games, took the black pieces and entered a Sicilian Dragon setup. Erigaisi adopted the same attacking plan that Vaishali had successfully used against him in the recent Women’s Candidates Tournament.
“Vaishali’s win with this line was in my mind, especially how she kept her king safe and placed the bishop on b3 to attack Black’s position,” Erigaisi said. “I followed the same idea, and that’s where the game really started to tilt in my favour.”
Joint‑leadership after three rounds
After three rounds, Erigaisi is tied for the lead with Magnus Carlsen, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Yağız Erdoğmuş and Andy Woodward, all on two points out of three. The standings reflect a tightly packed field, with several elite players still in contention for the title as the tournament moves into its decisive phase.
Erdoğmuş upset the tournament’s only female participant, Zhu Jiner, while Carlsen, despite arriving seven minutes late for his game, held Abdusattorov to a draw. The collision between Jordan van Foreest and Andy Woodward also ended in a draw, preserving their chances at the top.
