Muscat, 31 May (H.S.): Amid ongoing diplomatic maneuvers in West Asia and ongoing U.S.–Iran talks, Oman has issued a maritime security warning after a suspected floating object was sighted in the Strait of Hormuz. Fears are growing that the object may be a naval sea mine, heightening concerns over navigation safety in the critical waterway.
Oman's Maritime Security Department stated in an official bulletin that a suspicious floating object was observed within Omani waters in the Strait of Hormuz, specifically in the western section of the Inshore Traffic Zone. Following the sighting, all mariners, fishermen, and commercial vessels have been advised to exercise heightened caution.
Maritime security officials urged all sea users to maintain a safe distance from any suspicious object and to report any such activity immediately to the relevant authorities. Security agencies are monitoring the situation closely and efforts to identify the object are underway.
The warning comes at a sensitive time as talks between the United States and Iran continue with the aim of reducing tensions and establishing lasting peace in the region. In recent days, both countries have discussed several issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most vital energy and commercial maritime routes.
According to reports, the United States has laid out several conditions for a potential agreement with Iran, including resolution of nuclear program-related issues and ensuring the unimpeded passage of international commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the American administration seeks an agreement that aligns with the interests of regional stability and global security.
