New Delhi, 30 May (H.S.): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a statutory notice to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) over alleged violations of food safety and hygiene norms aboard the LTT–Ernakulam Duronto Express.

The action follows a video that went viral on social media purporting to show catering staff washing utensils in a train toilet area. The clip has sparked serious public concern about the cleanliness of railway catering services.

Taking the matter seriously, the FSSAI on Saturday sought an immediate clarification from IRCTC and directed the corporation to submit a detailed action-taken report (ATR). The authority warned that if the allegations are found to be true, they would constitute a clear breach of food safety and hygiene standards with potential adverse effects on passenger health.

In a statement posted on X, the FSSAI said it issued a statutory notice to IRCTC on May 28 concerning serious food safety and hygiene violations on train number 12223 and instructed the corporation to furnish an immediate, comprehensive ATR on the matter.

IRCTC, meanwhile, has said an investigation is under way and that necessary corrective measures have been taken.
