New Delhi, May 30 (H.S.): India has achieved a significant milestone in the digital healthcare sector, with more than 900 million Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA)created under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

The ABHA is a 14-digit digital health identification number that enables citizens to securely link, access, and, when required, share their health records with consent. The system reduces the need for patients to repeatedly carry medical documents and helps make the healthcare delivery process more seamless and efficient.

On Saturday, the National Health Mission released data covering the past five years. According to the figures, the number of ABHA accounts has witnessed steady growth since the mission's launch. While there were 147 million accounts in 2021, the figure rose to 304 million in 2022, 506 million in 2023, 722 million in 2024, and 845 million in 2025. The total has now surpassed the 900 million mark in 2026.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh leads the country with more than 153 million ABHA accounts. It is followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra, each with approximately 71 million accounts, while Bihar has recorded 63 million accounts and West Bengal nearly 59 million accounts.

Women's participation in the initiative has also been noteworthy. Nearly 49.75 percent of all ABHA account holders are women, reflecting growing awareness and increasing participation in digital healthcare services across the country.

In a statement, Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority (NHA), said that the creation of more than 900 million ABHA accounts is the result of the collective efforts of citizens, states, Union Territories, and various partner institutions.

He stated that ABHA provides citizens with secure and consent-based control over their health information and will play a crucial role in making healthcare services more accessible, efficient, and patient-centric in the future.

According to the government, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is working towards building a nationwide digital health ecosystem where citizens' medical records remain secure, portable, and readily accessible whenever needed. The initiative is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve continuity of care by enabling seamless access to health information across different healthcare providers and regions.
