Thiruvananthapuram, 28 May (H.S.): A Central intelligence report has reportedly concluded that the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials outside former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence during the CMRL-Exalogic monthly pay-off case raids was not spontaneous, but a “well-planned and coordinated” act.
According to sources, the report points to a possible conspiracy behind the violence and criticises the Kerala Police for failing to effectively disperse the agitated crowd that gathered during the ED operation. The report also reportedly highlights serious lapses in the manner in which police registered the cases related to the incident.
So far, seven persons have been taken into police custody in connection with the clashes, though arrests have been formally recorded only for five individuals. Central agencies have also raised concerns that no individuals were specifically named as accused in the second FIR filed in the case.
Police initially booked the accused under charges including unlawful assembly. However, the ED has maintained that its officials were attacked with deadly weapons while carrying out official duties. Based on statements provided by ED personnel, Thampanoor police have now registered an attempt to murder case against those allegedly involved in the attack.
The intelligence report also notes that several senior CPM leaders, including ministers and party functionaries such as V. Sivankutty, V. Joy MLA, and CPM state secretary M.V. Govindan, were present at the scene during the protest. However, only local SFI and DYFI activists have so far been named as accused in the police cases, the report reportedly states.
The ED has further indicated that the violence appeared to have been pre-planned rather than the result of a sudden confrontation. Sources suggest that the agency informed higher authorities that certain documents were recovered during the raids conducted at residences linked to the case, including the residence of Pinarayi Vijayan.
During the searches, officials also seized the mobile phone of Veena Vijayan, daughter of the former Chief Minister and owner of Exalogic Solutions. The phone is expected to undergo forensic examination as part of the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, police are preparing to register another case against CPM workers for allegedly attacking police personnel during the clashes. Injured police officers have reportedly given statements in this regard. The CPM workers arrested in connection with the violence are expected to be produced before court and remanded on Thursday.
