Kolkata, 25 May (H.S.): Trinamool Congress is facing renewed concern over its hold on civic bodies in West Bengal after 15 councillors of the North Barrackpore Municipality resigned simultaneously on Monday, taking responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the recent Assembly elections. The municipal chairman has also stepped down, triggering major administrative uncertainty in the civic body.

The North Barrackpore Municipality comprises 23 wards. Three councillors had already passed away earlier, and with 15 resignations now submitted together, the municipality has effectively plunged into a governance crisis.

Following the heavy defeat of Trinamool Congress in the 2026 Assembly elections, mass resignations by party councillors have been reported from several municipalities across the state, including Kanchrapara, Halisahar, Bhatpara and Garulia. The latest resignations from North Barrackpore have intensified political speculation.

Opposition parties claimed the development reflects growing public disconnect and internal factionalism within the ruling party. However, a section of Trinamool leaders maintained that the resignations are part of an effort to reorganize and rebuild the party structure at the grassroots level.

The developments have added to the ruling party’s anxiety over municipal governance in the state. Although most civic bodies in West Bengal are still controlled by Trinamool Congress, recent political pressure and a series of resignations have weakened the stability of several municipal boards.

Last week, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with representatives of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and urged party leaders to remain connected to the grassroots. Amid the fresh crisis, she has now convened a meeting on Monday evening at her Kalighat residence with mayors, chairpersons and councillors of Dum Dum, North Dum Dum, South Dum Dum, Baranagar municipalities and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

The latest resignations in North Barrackpore have once again raised questions over the stability of Trinamool-run civic bodies in the post-election political landscape of West Bengal.
